The Gossamer Tree

Toni Knapp. Rockrimmon Press, $12.95 (32pp) ISBN 978-0-929092-00-3

Four hungry field mice, sleeping through the winter, wake up when four insects knock at their door. In comes Spider, Ladybug, Cricket and Firefly, with nothing to offer, but thankful to have a warm place to stay. As the four newcomers tell stories, the mice once again sleep, and magical events followSpider spins a magnificent web on a small tree, Ladybug (by flitting around the room) puts food in the cupboards and on the table, Cricket makes beautiful music and Firefly's glow warms them all. All eight of them eat well and rejoice in friendship. Children will respond to the sentiments behind the story, as well as the tiny dots and watercolor shadows that cast a friendly light on the tale. But the price, on par with many hardcovers, makes this a difficult paperback purchase to justify. Ages 7-12. (Oct.)
