El Ulises de James Joyce: Una Lectura Posible

Marta Merajver-Kurlat. Jorge Pinto Books, $19.95 (208pp) ISBN 978-0-9801147-7-5

Addressing readers who have abandoned James Joyce's Ulysses after five or ten pages, Merajver-Kurlat has written an exhaustive yet nonacademic guide to deciphering the characters and background of the classic Irish novel. Bringing together 30 years of seminars dedicated to illuminating the events of June 16, 1904, when the novel is set, the book is written specifically for Spanish-language readers. Merajver-Kurlat divides the narrative into mini sections of two to three pages that each consider one aspect key to understanding the twisting path of the Joycian labyrinth. These sections range from descriptive insight (e.g., an overview of the Bloom family history) to more literary clues (e.g., explanations of Joyce's imagery) and are illustrated with quotes from the original text. The author also provides a short biography and a bibliography for further reading. Aimed at the nonscholarly reader, and written in an accessible language, this book is ideal for high school students or for patrons reading for pleasure. However, the vague chapter titles, page numbers that don't match up with the table of contents, and the lack of footnotes and references makes this best suited for large public libraries only.-Alison Hicks, Univ. of Colorado at Boulder
