Walker’s second Secrets & Shadows romantic thriller (after Deeper than Need) advances the story arc of a small town’s secrets coming to light, but it shortchanges the reader on both romance and suspense. Lana Rossi began her decades-long self-imposed exile from Madison, Ind., after a failed attempt to publicize the heinous activities of the Cronus Club resulted in a night of discoveries and death. New developments lure her back to see her father, and she soon runs into Adam Brascum, who fell for the passionate Lana when they were in their teens. Shortly after her incognito return, Adam invites her to stay with him and confide in him. More deaths of several members of the notorious club affect other townsfolk, including Noah, Lana’s first love, who’s now planning his wedding to another woman. Awkward pacing and perfunctory romantic development are only slightly offset by a significant reveal. Agent: Irene Goodman, Irene Goodman Literary Agency. (Oct.)
