Wedding Crochet: 20 Romantic & Feminine Crochet Designs for Your Special Day

Sandy Powers. Sellers (www.rsvp.com), $19.95 trade paper (128p) ISBN 978-1-4162-0912-6

Powers’s collection of crocheted patterns hits all the high points of a wedding day, from the bride’s veil to crocheted bowls for reception favors. The loveliest designs are in the first two chapters: a selection of veils with crocheted flowers is charming and flattering for the bride, while Powers’s array of cardigans, wraps, shawls, and shrugs is comprehensive enough that an ambitious crocheter could use this book to craft something for everyone from the flower girl to the mother of the bride. Later designs are more hit or miss: crocheted wedding cakes look lumpy, and other designs look like the author might have been trying to flesh out the book (the short lace gloves, for example, don’t much resemble gloves). While the photographs are inspiring, it is sometimes hard to see the details of an item crocheted in white and then styled over a white dress. Photos are provided for each stage of the crocheting, but the final product is only shown modeled. Another important point for potential readers: while the book rates almost every design as “easy,” many are not, and no basic crochet instructions are provided. This is a book squarely aimed at an experienced crocheter. More than 150 full-color photos. (Sept.)
