Where Is Mama? A Pop-Up Story

Yating Hung. Abrams Appleseed, $19.95 (24p) ISBN 978-1-4197-0718-6
Hung follows five tadpoles trying to track down their mother. As they travel through the pond, mistaking other animals for their mother, they collect details about her. “I am not your mother, little tadpoles,” says Mama Fish. “Your mother has strong legs.” Hung’s gentle cartooning gives the animals personality, and the pop-ups have a nice sense of movement (Mama Duck waves her wings, Mama Turtle seems to swim). The addition of a dyspeptic crab injects the story with a dose of light humor and helps point the tadpoles in the right direction. Ages 2–5. (Apr.)
