Popular: The Ups and Downs of Online Dating from the Most Popular Girl in New York City

Lauren Urasek. Sterling, $16.95 (224p) ISBN 978-1-4549-1722-9

Declared by New York Magazine to be the most messaged woman on OKCupid, makeup artist Urasek provides advice on successfully navigating online dating and humorously shares her own experiences in that world. Her stories involve the inevitable married man, a brief stint with a sugar daddy, and a fling with a prominent comedian, which reads like a Page Six blind item. Some of Urasek’s friends weigh in on their own dating insanity, from the woman who had a gun pulled on her by a heretofore congenial stoner, to one whose suitor turned out to be a neo-Nazi. Urasek also includes guidance for creating the most effective online profile, makeup tips, and, in a recurring feature called “They Really Said This,” some of the worst messages she has ever received on OKCupid. Her list of dating red flags is persuasive if not terribly original. In fact, much of the material is familiar, not surprisingly given the plethora of books on online dating. Certain aspects of Urasek’s narrative persona are grating, such as her critical comments about other women’s appearances, which sit uneasily alongside her defense of feminism. Still, there are laugh-out-loud moments: the story of the date texting her from the bathroom is worth sticking around for. Agent: Jessica Regel, Foundry Literary + Media. (Oct.)
