CQ, Canine Quarterly for the Modern Dog

Ina Schell. Main Street Press, $8.94 (96pp) ISBN 978-1-55562-035-6

In this parody of Gentleman's Quarterly, put out by the publishers of last year's bestselling Dogue, every dog has its day. In copy from a Puppy Rabonne pour chien ad, one canine creature says to her lover, ""I meant to tell you. I love the way you smell. Most dogs smell likewell, like dogs, but I've never sniffed anything like your cologne before.'' In a Jack Spaniel's Distillery ad the copy notes that the whiskey tradition has lasted ``121 years (that's 847 in dog years).'' There are articles about ``Gifts for Your Favorite Human''; a cover story and interview with Spuds MacKenzie, the Bud Light ``party animal''; and letters, including one from D. Pinscher in Mutterey, Calif., reading: ``I was certainly shocked by your coverage of the Barker Bakker scandal, but the photos of the Barker mansion did give me a good idea. How can I get my people to spring for an air-conditioned doghouse? It would be perfect for summer entertaining!'' Readers ought to howl. 100,000 first printing; $50,000 ad/promo; author tour.
