Nine Months and a Day: A Pregnancy, Labor, and Delivery Companion

Adrienne B. Lieberman, Linda Hughey Holt. Harvard Common Press, $11.95 (160pp) ISBN 978-1-55832-150-2

Lieberman (Easing Labor Pain) and Holt (AMA Guide to Woman Care) tackle a wide range of issues of interest to pregnant women, including a month-by-month guide to how the baby is developing inside the womb; advice on healthy nutrition and exercise; suggestions on how to choose a caregiver and birthing location; preventive measures and simple remedies for some of pregnancy's minor aches and pains; and a very helpful in-depth description of the labor and birth process itself. The authors answer many routine questions--such as ""Should I have natural childbirth or choose medication?"" and ""Will I need help at home after the baby comes?""--in detail. Extensive coverage expands on what could go wrong during pregnancy and childbirth (in fact, the book reads in parts like a medical textbook), and the authors devote space to such alternatives as midwives and out-of-hospital births.
