Rookie Dad: Adventures in Fatherhood

Rick Epstein. Hyperion Books, $17.95 (183pp) ISBN 978-1-56282-970-4

The author of the syndicated column ``Dad's Eye View'' here offers a beguiling love story. His tale begins with the birth of the Epsteins' first child, Marie, and chronicles the dramatic changes she makes in the couple's lives and the acceleration of those changes when daughter Sally arrives three and a half years later. The family saga contains a full complement of laughter, tears, emergencies, lost tempers and making up--all related in a warm, intimate style. Women readers ?/you're right; you have a broader sense of feminism that some of us.gs will appreciate the author's feminist views, reinforced by outings with his manly chums in which he discovers that beer-guzzling and roughhousing have lost their appeal. This father enjoys returning home to his womenfolk; separation from Marie when she starts school proves a major trauma. Her entry into kindergarten closes the book but holds out the promise of a sequel detailing Epstein's further adventures in fatherhood. ( June )
