The Kabbalah of Envy: Transforming Hatred, Anger, and Other Negative Emotions

Nilton Bonder, Bonder Nilton. Shambhala Publications, $18 (224pp) ISBN 978-1-57062-294-6

Having applied the wisdom of the kabbalistic traditions to the realm of money (Kabbalah of Money), Rabbi Bonder now turns his attention to the ways in which such Jewish spiritual traditions might be used in transforming negative emotions like anger and hatred. His reflections are down-to-earth, based in stories from the rabbinical tradition. For example, in discussing envy, Bonder begins his meditation by reflecting on the Yiddish proverb, ""A man with a beautiful wife makes a poor friend,"" and he then develops his comments on the nature of envy and suggests ways that envy may be overcome. Bonder invites readers to use these stories as lenses through which to understand and transcend negative emotions. His insights demonstrate ways in which spirituality may be incorporated into everyday life. Though Bonder's reflections are grounded in Jewish tradition, his reflections on the power of love in transforming negative emotions will appeal to a broad audience. (June)
