A Lowcountry Murder

Daniel Bailey. Overmountain Press, $9.95 (202pp) ISBN 978-1-57072-318-6

At the start of this run-of-the-mill whodunit from Bailey (Justice Betrayed), Jed Bradley, who was once a high-flying Atlanta detective, returns home to the small South Carolina community of Sweetgrass, where he's drawn into an odd double murder case committed on the very site of the murder of his brother, Bobby, decades earlier. Jed's presence at the crime scene makes him an object of suspicion, even as various community members with some connection to the inquiry into Bobby's death start dropping like flies. An overly familiar set-up, complete with an attractive old flame of Jed's who predictably becomes a hostage in the last act, isn't helped by cliched prose (""Around the world, especially in the South Carolina lowcountry, the arrival of spring marks a time of renewal"").
