Balfour and Meriwether in The Incident of the Harrowmoor Dogs

Daniel Abraham. Subterranean (www.subterraneanpress.com), $20 (88p) ISBN 978-1-59606-576-5

Balfour and Meriwether are agents of Queen Victoria who are assigned a curious case: fellow agent Daniel Winters has vanished mysteriously near a sanitarium on the moors. Michael Caster, a disgraced poet and explorer staying at the sanitarium, claims to have nightmare visions of a strange world beneath the Earth, populated by terrifying dogs. To the surprise of both agents, England is, in fact, being menaced by massive, brutal, intelligent dogs. Abraham (the Dragon’s Path series) fits some surprising twists into this novella, and as the dogs close in and Caster makes himself useful, much philosophizing about abominations and alliances ensues. This chapbook will make an interesting addition to any devoted Abraham fan’s collection. (Nov.)
