TOO MANY BUNNIES

Matt Novak, . . Roaring Brook, $7.95 (16pp) ISBN 978-1-59643-038-9

Five plump rabbits peer out of the die-cut hole on the cover of this square book (which parents might liken to an old 45-rpm record sleeve, with the rabbits' ears pointing to the center). "This hole is too crowded," the bunnies agree. In the opening spread, they all squeeze into the hole's opening on the right-hand page, while a bunnyless hole appears on the left-hand side, suggesting roomier accommodations. As readers flip the pages, layer by layer, another rabbit reappears in the spacious digs next door, leaving its companions behind. First, "Chubby hopped out of the hole, across the field, and into the empty hole. 'Big,' said Chubby." He's soon joined by Fuzzy, Floppy, Whiskers, who prefers the warmth of cramped quarters, and Bob, who gets lonely. Novak's (Mouse TV ) pink, purple and orange bunnies resemble plush toys. Due to the descending-layer format, only their heads are visible; their mild expressions change from uncomfortable to content, depending which side they're on. To show the messy results of the bunnies' move, Novak includes some comic stage business among three disgruntled bugs: a bee and caterpillar whose gardens are trampled, and a ladybug whose front yard fills with muddy footprints. The entertaining design encourages younger readers to move the rabbits back and forth. Ages 4-7. (Mar.)
