B-Movie Attack

Alan Spencer. Samhain (www.samhainpublishing.com), $16 trade paper (288p) ISBN 978-1-60928-925-6

Spencer (This Town Eats Everything) delights with this wildly entertaining madcap novel of demons manipulating humans for their own entertainment. While Chicago authorities are puzzled by unexplainable incidents, downtrodden Ted Fuller is being offered a deal: recovery of his stolen horror films followed by pleasure at the hands of five luscious women. He doesn’t mind that the offer comes from a grotesque flying vampire who transforms before his eyes into a gorgeous nude goddess. As each film plays, a helpless Ted watches his horrific characters step out of the movies into the real world. With time ticking down, Ted tries to stop the attack from within while meter reader Billy Carton works with recently dead good guys to fight the demons. Snippets from the horror films and ghastly characters such as the Intestinator provide strong visual descriptions with a dash of eroticism. Frequent revisiting of known information slows the otherwise absorbing and splattery story. (Dec.)
