Little One-Yard Wonders: Irresistible Clothes, Toys and Accessories You Can Make for Babies and Kids

Rebecca Yaker and Patricia Hoskins. Storey, $29.95 paper with concealed wire-o and patterns (360p) ISBN 978-1-61212-124-6

Yaker and Hoskins add another volume to their series of bestsellers, all of which use one yard of fabric as a base. In this book, their focus is on patterns for babies and kids, a savvy choice since lots of parents and grandparents are on the lookout for cute new designs to sew for their little ones. From a Safari Sleep Sack to hold baby at night to a Pajama Monster to hold PJs during the day, the 101 patterns will give every sewist a design he or she must try. The authors have organized their patterns into sections based on type, so Home and Kitchen gets a section, as do Tops, Accessories, and half a dozen other categories. This is workable, but leaves the reader with no way to sort patterns by skill level, which could be frustrating: a complex Western shirt is right next to a supremely simple Long Beach Tee. So the book feels a little jumbled, and the design of each page, determined to pack in the materials needed, the cutting layout, instructions for each project, along with diagrams, doesn’t help. Still, there’s a lot for the reader who can take the time to sort through it all. Full-color photos. (June)
