The New Evangelization and You: Be Not Afraid

Greg Willits. Franciscan Media/Servant, $16.99 trade paper (160p) ISBN 978-1-61636-515-8

When it comes to spreading the Catholic faith, the contents are the same, but the packaging needs to change. So declares popular author and Catholic talk show host Willits. The author highlights the three-point plan of the "new evangelization," a term first used by Pope John Paul II: know the faith, live the faith, share the faith. He encourages Catholics to be vocal about their faith and to not be afraid to talk about what they believe and why they believe it. To help encourage believers, he offers brief but compelling biographical sketches of Catholic evangelizers. Also included are suggestions about contemporary evangelization tools, such as blogs, websites, and online educational materials for the faithful who wish to grow in their knowledge of Catholicism. Sadly, there's not much here for those who are struggling with their faith and/or have legitimate quarrels with Catholicism. But Catholics who are looking for the motivation and encouragement to embrace their faith more fully will be energized. (May)
