Bake Sales Are My Bitch: Win the Food Allergy Wars with 50 Recipes to Keep Kids Safe and Parents Sane

April Peveteaux. Rodale, $15.99 trade paper (240p) ISBN 978-1-62336-720-6

Blogger Peveteaux’s bouts with celiac disease resulted in two previous books, Gluten Is My Bitch (2013) and The Gluten-Free Cheat Sheet (2015); here, she expands on that knowledge to offer fellow parents a worry-free guide to foods they can prepare for their children at parties, get-togethers, and school events. She also has sage advice on identifying and dealing with food allergies. Parents unsure whether their children have allergies will appreciate her tips on identifying trigger foods. Peveteaux also helps teach parents how to coach their kids on living with allergies and gives insights on decoding labels to identify allergens in common foods. This all culminates in the book’s collection of 50 dishes (all free of common allergens) that can be taken to school, included in lunches, or prepared for sleepovers. Gluten-free Twinkies, cinnamon Pop Tarts, buffalo wings, DIY Popsicles, and the ingenious Snackadium, a smorgasbord of simple foods for parties, are just some of the recipes parents will want to bookmark. Though the subject is serious—anaphylactic shock is nothing to joke about—Peveteaux’s irreverent and frequently profane take on the subject brings both levity and perspective to the discussion. Allergic readers of all ages will appreciate her approximations of and alternatives to classic snacks. (Apr. 2017)
