Flash! Splash! Crash!: All at Sea with Cap'n Bob: My Astonishing Adventures with Robert Maxwell

Mike Maloney. Mainstream Publishing Company, $35 (208pp) ISBN 978-1-85158-853-4

Written with the assistance of biographer Hall, Maloney's less than astonishing adventures began when media mogul Maxwell added Britain's Daily Mirror to his publishing empire and appointed Maloney, who was on staff, to be his personal photographer. Over the next seven years until Maxwell's mysterious death at sea, he traveled with ""Cap'n Bob"" to many locales, including the former Soviet Union, the U.S. and China and, according to Maloney, became a member of Maxwell's inner circle. Although the author's observations of his employer's meetings with world leaders Gorbachev, Reagan and Lech Walesa are interesting, there is little information about Maxwell's financial manipulations or insight into his character. Maloney does detail some of Cap'n Bob's cruder behavior, such as urinating onto crowds from tall buildings and gobbling food with his hands. He also relates a meeting with several rabbis in a manner that betrays both Maxwell's and the author's insensitivity. A tacky and trivial memoir accompanied by Maloney's accomplished photos. (Jan.)
