In this visually striking book, when Sandy (who looks like a rag doll) visits Grandpa at the beach, she's dismayed that someone left trash in the sand (“Hadn't they ever heard of recycling?”). Picking up the garbage, she meets the “Garbage Lady,” who teaches her about her ecological footprint: “The footprint of your life is the mark you leave on the world.” While the message can feel didactic, Steele-Card's layered constructions, made from recycled and natural materials, are eye-catching.
