Remember, Remember

Lisa Cutts. Myriad (IPG, dist.), $13.95 trade paper (368p) ISBN 978-1-908434-39-5

In 1964, seven people die and dozens are injured when a London express train strikes a truck stuck on a crossing in the English countryside. Fifty years later, Det. Constable Nina Foster investigates in Cutts’s nicely plotted follow-up to 2013’s Never Forget. Oddly enough, a series of recent drug-related deaths seem to be connected to the train crash, and Nina finds herself following a trail of vengeance and greed stretching back decades. The author’s experience as a Kent police officer ensures authenticity, but it’s Nina that lights up the pages. She’s a bit of a trouble magnet and fiercely independent, with a smart sense of humor and a slightly messy personal life. Readers may be reminded of Stephanie Plum minus the gonzo silliness. Some exposition-laced dialogue mars the beginning, but Nina’s narrative is mostly smooth sailing from there. This will scratch the itch of readers who don’t like their procedurals to get too dark.
