ALL ABOUT COWBOYS FOR KIDS: Part 1

, . . TM Books & Video, $12.95 (0pp) ISBN 978-1-932291-18-6

The cowboy way of life may have changed since the days of the Old West, but it's still alive and well in Wyoming, as shown in this top-notch video snapshot. A well-spoken lad named Jeff is the narrator and guide to all things Western during this visit to various spots in Laramie and Cheyenne. Laid back ranch hand Rattlesnake Jake gives a brief history of cowboys, their animals and tools, complete with demonstration of a bullwhip. A trip to the Cheyenne Frontier Days Rodeo (the largest event of its kind) puts bronco and bull riding, calf roping and other exciting cowboy contests in the spotlight. Other highlights include a segment with a horse trainer who is "breaking" a new horse (using the modern psychological techniques, as opposed to old-time bronco busting), and a day in the life of seven-year-old cowboy Bridger who rounds up sheep on his family's ranch with his pony Mabel. Rope tricks and a ride on the Union Pacific Challenger steam engine train are part of the experience, too. All along the way, Jeff offers fun historical facts and other points of interest, noting that rodeos are a way to keep the traditions of the Old West alive. And Zill offers original cowboy-inspired songs that keep the action at a nice gallop. Ages 3-up. (Feb.)

FYI: All About Cowboys for Kids: Part 2, featuring more cowboy lore and action, is a simultaneous release.
