Diccionario de Internet

Alvaro Castells. Deusto, $24.1 (0pp) ISBN 978-84-234-1769-8

Spanish-born Castells has published or co-authored more than 30 books on the internet and related technology, including Fotografia en internet (Photography in the Internet, Anaya Multimedia, 1998). This time he has compiled an alphabetically arranged dictionary of nearly 1,000 internet acronyms and key words, some familiar to the average user and others of a more arcane nature. The entries are in English or Spanish, depending on whether the translation of a specific term has gained wide acceptance among Spanish speakers. For example, the definition of ""password"" appears under contrase$a, but the entries for ""backbone"" and ""flame mail"" are in English. Useful cross references direct the reader to the preferred terminology. The definitions also include URLs for exemplary websites, screen captures, and other illustrative material. The English edition of this work has been published as The Internet Dictionary: A Comprehensive Guide to the Language of the Web (London: Kogan Page, 2001). This affordable dictionary is a useful addition to school, public, and academic libraries. Ceres Birkhead, Univ. of Utah Lib., Salt Lake City
