Shaara Rises to the List

by Daisy Maryles -- Publishers Weekly, 7/16/2001

Jeff Shaara's books on the Civil War have been critical and commercial successes. The Last Full Measure and Gods and Generals enjoyed runs of 10 and 15 weeks, respectively, on PW's hardcover charts back in the mid-'90s. He hits the current list in the #10 spot after about a week in the stores, but this time it's with a novel about the American Revolution, Rise to Rebellion. PW gave it a starred review and Ballantine notes that it is the first time the author has enjoyed that form of critical recognition. Total copies in print is 125,000 after three trips to press. Shaara kicked off publication July 4 (this country's 225th anniversary) with an appearance on Today and the first stop on his tour was his annual visit to Gettysburg. The tour will take him to the 13 original colonies through the end of July and to a total of 26 bookstores by the time it ends September 7.
