Cummins to Leave SLJ

Staff -- Publishers Weekly, 7/23/2001

Julie Cummins, editor of School Library Journal since October 2000, will be leaving the publication with the completion of the August issue. Cummins came to the post from the New York Public Library, where she had been the coordinator of Children's Services since 1987. SLJ publisher Fred Ciporen, who announced the decision, said, Cummins "is a highly respected member of the children's library profession and deserves recognition for her contributions to the world of children's literature."

Cummins has served as a councilor and an executive board member of the American Library Association, as well as on its Newbery and Caldecott Award committees, and is a former chair of the Notable Children's Books Committee. Cummins has also published several children's titles including The Inside-Outside Book of Libraries (Dutton, 1996) and most recently Tomboy of the Air (HarperCollins, 2001).
