The Reichs Stuff

It seems like the third time's the bestseller charm for mystery author Kathy Reichs, whose Fatal Voyage becomes her third book to land on PW's charts. (Déjà Dead enjoyed a six-week run in 1997, and Deadly Decisions had a four-week stint last summer.) When Reichs's heroine, forensic anthropologist Temperance Brennan, investigates a commercial airliner crash, she makes good use of her creator's "day job" expertise (make that "jobs")—Reichs is forensic anthropologist for the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner of North Carolina and director of Forensic Anthropology for the province of Quebec. She's also a professor of anthropology at the University of North Carolina at Charlotte. That city's been the focal point for considerable promotion; national publicity has included appearances on Today and Court TV's Catherine Crier Live, along with print coverage in Entertainment Weekly, USA Today and People. Published by Scribner on July 17, Fatal Voyage has 150,000 copies in print. Pocket's mass market of Deadly Decisions (copies in print: 575,000) also debuts on our list today, scoring a double for Reichs.
