August Publications

In Murder a Mile High, by Elizabeth Dean (1901-85), antiques dealer Emma Marsh must contend with the murder of a Colorado opera company tenor as well as Nazi spies. Originally published in 1944 and third in the Emma Marsh trilogy, it was one of the first mysteries with a strong Colorado setting. (Rue Morgue [P.O. Box 4119, Boulder, Colo. 80306], $14 paper 188p ISBN 0-915230-39-4)

In Dean Feldmeyer's (the Edgar-nominated Viper Quarry) fourth Dan Thompson mystery, Crimson Creek, the Reverend Thompson and Constable Ray Hall have to deal with a renegade drug enforcement agent, the mysterious death of a religious cult leader, a biker gang and a car loaded with drunken teenagers. And that's just for starters. (Silver Dagger [Overmountain, dist.], $23.95 204p ISBN 1-57072-176-9)

An overzealous prosecutor accuses the wrong man when someone murders the husband and wife owners of the Red Dog Saloon in Kootenai Falls, Mont., in John Hermann's Murder at the Red Dog, the first in a new mystery series featuring manly reporter Brew Moore. Brew and his faithful border collie, Jessie, soon get on the trail of federal agents who have no business meddling in the lives of the locals. (Deadly Alibi [P.O. Box 5947, Vancouver, Wash. 98661], $16.95 paper 174p ISBN 1-881699-14-1)
