Betty Lundsted

Staff -- Publishers Weekly, 7/30/2001

Betty Lundsted, publisher of Nicolas-Hays Inc. and former v-p and editorial director of Samuel Weiser Inc., died at home after a long illness July 7. She was 60. Lundsted's publishing career began at Academic Press in New York City, where she was art director. While at Academic, she studied metaphysics, religion, psychology, philosophy and astrology, which led her to the Weiser Esoteric Bookstore and to Donald Weiser, whom she later married. Together, they founded Samuel Weiser, a publisher of esoteric titles. In the 1970s, Lundsted acquired Nicolas-Hays, where over the next 30 years, she published authors whose work was based on the theories of Carl Jung. She is survived by Donald Weiser, who will continue to run Nicolas-Hays's publishing program. Donations may be sent in Lundsted's name to: Marlee Animal Shelter, Boyd Rd., Wells, Maine 04090, or to the American Cancer Society New England Division, 1 Main St., Suite 300, Topsham, Maine 04086.
