The Publishers Weekly Stock Index suffered its worst month of the year in July, with the index falling 6.6%. The stock prices of 15 companies fell in the month, while five companies saw a stock price increase and two saw virtually no change. The Dow Jones Industrial Average inched up 0.2% in July. Educational Development Corp., which is doing very well in selling books through home sales reps, had the biggest gain in the month, with its $4.25 per share price on July 31 down 20 cents from the 52-week high it hit on July 30. Millbrook Press's stock price hit its 52-week high of $3.93 on July 16, before settling back to $3.49 on July 31. Investors did not like the earnings warning issued by Reader's Digest late in July and pushed the company's stock price down 22% in the month. Life after Harry could be difficult for Scholastic, as investors did not appear impressed with the company's prospects without the boy wizard in the new fiscal year and dropped the price 17.4% in the month.
