AAP Sets Two Fall Seminars

Staff -- Publishers Weekly, 8/13/2001

The Association of American Publishers has planned two industry seminars. On September 28, the AAP Committee for Smaller and Independent Publishers will hold a conference on "Getting Your Books Sold." To be held at the Crown Plaza Hotel in San Francisco, the conference will offer publishers the opportunity to discuss a variety of topics, including diminishing book review pages, publicizing your frontlist books, getting your books reviewed, making the most of subrights, and special sales. Keynote speaker is Steve Piersante, president of Berrett-Koehler. Registration deadline is September 21, and tickets for AAP members are $165 and $215 for nonmembers. For more information, call Anne Garinger at (212) 255-0200, ext. 262.

On October 2, from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the McGraw-Hill Auditorium in New York City, the AAP's Freedom to Read Committee will hold a seminar, "Risky Business: Publishing Exposés in Print and Online." Discussion topics will include libel, invasion of privacy, publisher liability for chat rooms and bulletin boards, confidentiality of sources and the limits of First Amendment protection for news gathering. The panel will feature guest speakers including bestselling author James Stewart; Lisa Drew, vice-president and publisher of Lisa Drew Books/ Scribner; Esther Margolis, president and publisher of Newmarket Press; and Linda Steinman, associate general counsel at Random House. For more information, call Judy Platt at (202) 220-4551 or Amy Gwiazdowski at (202) 220-4550.
