David Jackson

David Earl Jackson, writer, book reviewer and cultural educator, died after a short bout with lymphoma August 15. He was 51. A self-described "cultural generalist," Jackson was an erudite, inspirational lecturer and a tireless organizer of cultural events focusing on black literature, music and the visual arts. He had been a D.J. at New York's WBAI, a book reviewer and writer for Publishers Weekly, QBR: The Black Book Review and other publications, and was a much-sought-after moderator and panelist for literary events such as New York Is Book Country. Along with literary agent Marie Brown, he organized the first book fair in Harlem (the Lewis Michaux Book Fair at the Studio Museum in Harlem) in the 1970s. He was scheduled to participate in this year's Harlem Book Fair before he became ill.
