"Where Do You Like to Do It?" Winners

By Trudi M. Rosenblum -- Publishers Weekly, 9/3/2001

Random House Audio has announced the winners of its "Where Do You Like to Do It?" contest (Audio, June 4). Contestants were invited to write a short essay, poem or story about their use of audiobooks. Winners received a CD Discman. The first-place winner was Stacy Alesi of Boca Raton, Fla., for this poem: "I like to do it in my car/ Peter Mayle takes me far/ I like to do it in the bath/ David Rakoff makes me laugh/ I like to do it while I run/ Lemony Snicket makes it fun/ I'd like to do it all the time/ Then aural pleasure would be mine!"

Second place went to Jackie Miller, an employee of Kate's Mystery Books in Cambridge, Mass., for this entry: "An Inconvenient Woman falls silent as Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil surrounds me. The spoken word is protective armor, as I Swim with Sharks in this Stormy Weather commute to work. While audioless drivers miss the Tara Road exit, I find The Return Journey home bliss."

The third-place winner was Todd Pierce for this poem: "Treadmilling at the gym/ I often look at other walkers/ headphones cupped over their ears/ and wonder what poets they are listening to/ what poems they can recite/ as we climb this perfectly sloped hill/ a loop of reinforced rubber,/ a road that never ends."
