An Indie Favorite

By Daisy Maryles -- Publishers Weekly, 9/3/2001

While Evans and Margolin are racking up sales at the chains, the newest hot title on the indie and regional track is Leif Enger's debut novel, Peace Like a River. It's already hit the Denver Post and Minneapolis Star Tribune bestseller lists and the Book Sense independent bookseller list; Barnes & Noble chose the title for its Discover Program. The reviews have been excellent, including a starred PW notice; the book has been sold to eight countries, with film rights going to David Brown (Jaws, Driving Miss Daisy, Chocolat). Enger launches a 17-city tour on September 13 in Denver, winding up a month later in Portland, Ore. Atlantic Monthly Press followed up its initial 65,000-copy print run with a second, pre-pub printing of 25,000; and has just hit the reprint button for an additional 15,000. Expectations are high that the book will soon hit the national charts.
