Delano Greenidge Editions Grows

by Calvin Reid -- Publishers Weekly, 9/3/2001

Since he began publishing economically priced reprints of out-of-print art books in 1988, Delano Greenidge has been tooling along with two or three books a year and paying the bills. But Greenidge is looking to grow his publishing firm, Delano Greenidge Editions, and he's made some changes. DGE will publish nine titles this year and expects to publish 16 to 20 books in 2002. The company is looking to publish a broader range of illustrated books on history, photography and design. It has added warehousing and fulfillment at the Weatherhill Warehouse in Trumbull, Conn., and U.S. sales representation by Continental Sales. DGE's books already do well overseas (50% of its sales, said Greenidge). His latest book (10,000 copies in print) is Gardner's Photographic Sketchbook of the American Civil War 1861– 1865, a carefully produced reprint edition of a classic Civil War work by Alexander Gardner, a photographer who left the studio of Matthew Brady to produce his own works. Coming this fall is Henry Darger: In the Realms of the Unreal by John McGregor, an examination of a massive work of fiction and illustration by the eccentric outsider artist, and Kodachrome: The American Invention of the World 1943–1959, edited by Els Rijper, a popular history of American life as depicted in the then newly developed color photographic medium. Greenidge told PW, "Our print runs are up, although we're wary of returns. Our sales are up 300% due to our volume and new distribution and sales networks. We're hoping to become more of a general publisher." DGE can be reached at (212) 674-7053.
