New Web Pointer

Calvin Reid -- Publishers Weekly, 12/2/1996

With the Web growing at an exponential rate, just finding the site you're looking for can be a formidable task. LookSmart, an Australian subsidiary of Reader's Digest, is the newest entry in the race to build a better search engine. LookSmart is an editorially selected database of more than 100,000 Web sites. Rather than the thousands of sites retrieved by search engines such as Alta Vista, Excite or InfoSeek, a LookSmart search recovers a manageable number of clearly annotated sites (although it's a bit slow to load). LookSmart has a clickable hierarchical index design that is less confusing and leaves a clear trail of the user's path, as well as a keyword search and personalized features. The screened searcher is also being marketed as safe surfing, said LookSmart marketing v-p David Dubbs: "No porn. You won't see anything you can't see on network TV."
