Author Bares All
by Daisy Maryles, with Dick Donahue -- Publishers Weekly, 4/7/1997
Although David Sedaris hates to have his picture taken, he couldn't say no to
People magazine coming to his apartment to shoot him with his boyfriend's collection of taxidermied animals. (The results can be seen in
People's March 24 issue.) This photographic foray is part of Little, Brown's extensive push for Sedaris's
Naked, a laugh-out-loud collection of wry autobiographical essays that's just below our top 15 nonfiction titles. Not surprisingly, LB's promo plans match the book's hip tone: magazine coverage, for example, has run the gamut from
Vogue,
Mirabella,
George and
Vanity Fair to the
Advocate,
Out and
Entertainment Weekly. Tour stops, too, have been all over the map, from New York to Atlanta to Iowa City (with another 15 or so destinations for good measure). After four printings, LB reports 80,000 copies in print; the publisher has donated copies to local NPR stations in Sedaris's tour cities for fund-drive giveaways. AP will be running a feature over the wire later this month, and Conan O'Brien has just booked this in-demand author for a late-night appearance (pajama-clad, we assume).
