...And Ballantine Signs Serial Killer Analysis

by Judy Quinn -- Publishers Weekly, 7/28/1997

Although Ballantine senior v-p Leona Nevler made this rumored high-six-figure acquisition just before the Versace murder, Guilty by Reason of Insanity, a book on the criminal psyche to be written by Yale and now Bellevue psychiatrist Dorothy Otnow Lewis, seems particularly timely now. Lewis, who was the last to interview Ted Bundy before his execution, makes the case that irreparable neurological damage plays a significant factor in these killers' psyches. Lewis, who was profiled in the New Yorker's crime issue last year, has been working on this book for five years. Agent Jonathon Lazear shopped the completed manuscript to four publishers. Nevler plans publication early next summer.
