Freud and Fauna

Scientific American writer John Horgan will follow up The End of Science, a 1996 Addison Wesley hardcover that led to a paperback rights auction won with a $300,000 bid from Broadway, with Why Freud Isn't Dead, to be published in fall 1999 by the Free Press. Agent John Brockman conducted the auction that led to the Free Press editor Stephen Morrow's six-figure bid for the new book. A fall 1998 publication is tentatively planned.And Jeffrey Moussaieff Masson, whose first book, The Assault on Truth: Freud's Suppression of the Seduction Theory (FSG, 1984), certainly dealt a blow to Freud's prestige, has just signed a two-book deal with Pocket senior editor Nancy Miller, who was the editor on that book. Masson, represented in the deal by agent Elaine Markson, will write one book on the subject of animals and fatherhood, and the other on animals and altruism, continuing the focus on animals in his 1995 bestseller When Elephants Weep (Doubleday) and Dogs Never Lie About Love, from Crown this September. Masson had followed editor Steve Ross from BDD to Crown, with the new Pocket deal rumored to be a significant six figure investment.
