Silverman Retires from Penguin
-- 1/5/98

Al Silverman retired as editor-at-large of Penguin USA on December 31. He joined Penguin in 1989, originally as an editor-at-large; he subsequently served three years as publisher and editor-in-chief of Viking, before resuming his editor-at-large duties. Silverman said he intends to "keep my hand in publishing." Prior to joining Penguin, Silverman had been chairman and CEO of the Book-of-the-Month Club. Among Silverman's authors have been Saul Bellow, T. Coraghessan Boyle, Robertson Davies and William Kennedy.
