Durkin Hayes Reorganization Moves Forward
-- 1/5/98

Durkin Hayes Publishing continues to reorganize its operations. Late last year, Paul Myles resigned as company chairman, a position he held for 18 months. Myles's resignation followed extensive restructuring in DH's third quarter that saw the company close its Sarasota, Fla., and Toronto offices. DH had opened the Florida office less than a year ago to be nearer to one of its largest customers, Eckerd's (News, Jan. 6, 1997).

With the closing of its Sarasota facility DH has moved its creative and sales teams back to its Burlington, Ont., headquarters. Dympna Hayes, whose father Cyril and brother Patrick at one-time headed DH, has been named editorial director. After cutting staff following the closing of its two offices, DH has begun rehiring again and now has about 34 employees.

Late last month, DH entered into an agreement with Harlequin that will give DH the audio rights to 48 titles from Harlequin's Mira and Gold Eagle lines. Beginning in April, DH will publish audio editions of 24 Mira titles and audio editions of 12 titles each in The Executioner and Deathlands series. The Mira audio versions will be released simultaneously with the print versions; DH has worldwide English rights to all 48 titles. Also in December, DH shipped its first-ever order to Dalton of its popular Paperback Audio series.

For the nine months, sales rose 11% to C$4 million and its net loss increased to C$323,445 from C$220,778.
