Business Leaders
Daisy Maryles -- 1/5/98

Official pub date for Die Broke: A Radical Four-Part Financial Plan by Stephen M. Pollan and Mark Levine was not scheduled until January 9, but HarperBusiness has already had an impressive bestseller run with this title and is anticipating more action this month. Happily, Pollan's four simple maxims -- don't retire, quit today, pay cash and die broke -- caught Oprah's attention, and she wanted to air a show about it at the end of October. Luckily, since Pollan was one of those rare authors with a finished manuscript ahead of time, HB was able to comply and a quick production schedule got the book into stores the week Pollan was on Oprah. Sales were strong enough to land the book among the top-five business titles on both USA Today's business bestseller list as well as on Business Week's monthly list (where it's still #3). The Oprah appearance will be rebroadcast January 9. HarperBusiness has gone back to press 10 times, bringing the in-print total to 110,000 copies.
