The 1998 John Newbery Medal, given for the most distinguished contribution to American literature for children, went to Karen Hesse for her Depression-era novel, Out of the Dust, published by Scholastic and edited by Brenda Bowen. The 1998 Randolph Caldecott Medal, given to the illustrator of the most distinguished picture book for children, went to Paul O. Zelinsky for his paintings in Rapunzel, published by Dutton Children's Books and edited by Donna Brooks. Zelinsky had previously won three Caldecott Honor Awards. The prizes were announced at the ALA's midwinter meeting in New Orleans on January 9.

There were three Newbery Honor authors: Patricia Reilly Giff for Lily's Crossing (Delacorte); Gail Carson Levine for Ella Enchanted (HarperCollins); and Jerry Spinelli for Wringer (HarperCollins/Cotler).

Three Caldecott Honor artists were also announced: Christopher Myers for Harlem, written by Walter Dean Myers (Scholastic); David Small for The Gardener, written by Sarah Stewart (FSG); and Simms Taback for There Was an Old Lady Who Swallowed a Fly (Viking).

The 1998 Laura Ingalls Wilder Medal, awarded every three years to an author or illustrator whose books have made a lasting contribution to children's literature, was given to historian and biographer Russell Freedman.

The Mildred L. Batchelder Award for the year's best translated work went to The Robber and Me by Josef Holub, translated from the German by Elizabeth D. Crawford (Holt).

Winners of the Coretta Scott King Awards, honoring an African American author and illustrator, were Sharon M. Draper, author of Forged by Fire (Atheneum); and Javaka Stept , illustrator of In Daddy's Arms I Am Tall (Lee &Low).

And the Pura Belpre Award, which honors Latino writers and illustrators, went to Stephanie Garcia, illustrator of Snapshots from the Wedding, written by Gary Soto (Putnam); and Victor Martinez, author of Parrot in the Oven (HarperCollins/Cotler). Martinez's book also won the 1996 National Book Award for Young People's Literature.
