Salon (www.salonmag.com), the literary and cultural web magazine, has announced its second annual awards for the 10 best (fiction/nonfiction) books of 1997. Fiction: Mason &Dixon by Thomas Pynchon; Alias Grace by Margaret Atwood (Dwight Garner, Salon's N.Y. editor, acknowledges that it's a 1996 book, but the editors liked it so much they didn't care); Cold Mountain by Charles Frazier; and The Reader by B. Schlink. Nonfiction: Close to the Machine by Ellen Ullman; The Spirit Catches You and You Fall Down by Anne Fadiman; Ech s of a Native Land by Serge Schmemann; How Proust Can Change Your Life by Alain de Botton; and Into Thin Air by Jon Krakauer.
