Steve Martin's 'A Public Apology' Judy Quinn -- 2/2/98
For a rumored $600,000 advance, Hyperion executive editor Leigh Haber acquired the rights from Esther Newberg to a collection of stories, some original, some that have appeared in the New Yorker and elsewhere, by comedian/actor/playwright Steve Martin. Martin, whose play Picasso at the Lapin Agile was published by Grove, previously scored a hit with the collection Cruel Sh s, published by Putnam in 1979 and an eventual 600,000-copy seller. Haber plans a November publication for the new collection, which takes its title, A Public Apology, from one of Martin's stories.
