That's what v-p Rick Horgan obviously is hoping with his "significant six-figure" acquisition of A Song for Mary: An Irish-American Memory by 57-year-old firefighter-turned-scribe Dennis Smith, who wrote the 1972 bestseller Report from Engine Company 82. The new book is a prequel of sorts to that book, an account of Dennis's rough-and-tumble boyhood on New York's Lower East Side, which includes an early heroin habit and a family secret (his father was in an asylum). Smith was represented in the deal by Al Zuckerman and an early 1999 publication is planned.
