Sweating a Big Statement Daisy Maryles, with Dick Donahue -- 2/2/98
The folks at Hyperion are ready to make a big claim for their mega-bestseller, Richard Carlson's Don't Sweat the Small Stuff: that it's the fasting-selling trade paperback ever, and perhaps even the fastest-selling book ever, not counting mass markets. The publisher cites some pretty impressive figures to back up its claim. The book, first published January 16, 1997 (first printing: 42,500), went on PW's trade paper chart on April 7; to date it has enjoyed a 42-week run, 27 of them in the #1 spot. Don't Sweat has gone back to press 27 times, bringing the in-print total to 4,457,500. It most probably is the bestselling book of 1997 (as pegged by USA Today). A slew of national and local media appearances has kept the book's profile high, but clearly a significant factor was three Oprah appearances. We'd welcome any bestseller followers disagreeing with Hyperion's claim (e-mail dmaryles@cahners.com).
