Publishers Pledge $240K to CCNY Publishing Program
-- 2/9/98

Eight publishers have pledged $240,000 and paid internships to support the Publishing Certificate Program at City College in New York City. The program, instituted in September 1997, is the brainchild of bestselling mystery writer Walter Mosley, former chair of PEN's Open Book Committee, and is aimed at increasing racial and ethnic diversity in the publishing industry.

Harcourt Brace, Bantam Doubleday Dell and John Wiley have pledged a total of $240,000, which will support the program through its first four years. The funds will be earmarked for paid internships, a lecture series featuring publishing industry leaders and general operating expenses.

Other publishers providing paid internships are the New Press, Penguin Putnam, Houghton Mifflin, Grove/Atlantic and Metropolitan Books. Additional funding is being sought from other industry partners.

Industry pros who are teaching courses in the program are Tracy Sherrod, editor at Holt; Wendy Lamb, executive editor of BDD Books for Young Readers; Marianne Martens, director of subsidiary rights and managing editor at North-South Books; John Jusino, formerly managing editor of Holt; and Leslie Sharpe, a book developer. The program may be reached at (212) 650-7925 or (212) 650-7927.
