Nautilus Update: Price Comes Down

Dick Harte, owner of the Delaware, Ohio-based Rutherford Book Shoppe, brought out his Nautilus Booksite software, designed to help independent booksellers to set up online storefronts, in 1996. Now Harte is releasing the latest version of the Nautilus Booksite 2.0 software at a much-reduced cost. Nautilus Booksite is a full-service online software package that allows booksellers to build their own Web sites, market their books and easily navigate Baker &Taylor's searchable 500,000-title database. Harte claims the latest version of Nautilus Booksite will strengthen independents' ability to compete with chains. "Let's face it, the Internet must be a part of any future bookstore marketing strategy," Harte said. Originally priced at about $2500, the one-time Booksite 2.0 activation fee is now $250, plus a monthly maintenance fee of $100 and a charge of roughly $75 a month for the Baker &Taylor database. Harte credits the hefty price reduction to the elimination of "unnecessary involvement of programmers and intermediary processing steps" and allowing "stores to directly enter their unique data." David Marcelli, owner of A.M. Booksellers in Utica, N.Y., a Booksite subscriber, agreed; he told PW the new software is "almost too easy."
