Online Advantage
Calvin Reid -- 3/16/98

With a tip of the virtual hat to Small Press Month (March), online bookseller Amazon.com (www.amazon.com) has launched Amazon Advantage, a program that it claims will bring higher digital visibility (through tweaking its database) to small and independent publishers and, hence, more sales. The program is free, but publishers must apply and, if accepted, provide: a 55% discount on submitted titles; title information, graphics and copies (shipped at the publisher's expense) to specified Amazon.com distribution centers and to its new Web marketing resource center. Amazon.com will upgrade a title's typical delivery time (four to six weeks) to priority status (ships in 24 hours), allowing these titles to show up more frequently during subject and topic searches. The program also provides constantly updated sales info to the publisher via a password-protected logon, as well as timely payment and automated reordering. In other news from Amazon.com, the company announced plans to begin selling music products, including CDs and cassettes, later this year.
