The publishing community will have a new 1000-pound gorilla with the merger of the two 500-pound ones -- BDD and Random Inc. If the merger were effective today, nine of the top 15 available slots (including the top four titles) in hardcover fiction would be held by the new corporate entity; in nonfiction the group would garner only six; in mass market paperback, it would also have six (albeit only one of them from the current RH group); plus four in trade paperback.
