Tribune Co. Buys Lowell House
-- 4/13/98

Tribune Company, through its NTC/Contemporary Publishing Group division, has acquired RGA Publishing Group/Lowell House. Based in Los Angeles, Lowell House was founded in 1984 by one-time Simon &Schuster executive Jack Artenstein and publishes children's educational workbooks and adult reference titles. Terms of the deal were not disclosed.

Lowell House will remain in Los Angeles under the direction of Artenstein, although back-office operations will be taken over by NTC. NTC already had been Lowell's trade distributor. In addition to creating editorial product, Lowell will provide NTC with increased agent and author contact on the West Coast, noted NTC president Mark Pattis. He also said that Lowell's "backlist orientation to book publishing is an ideal fit with our approach to publishing." Pattis added that with the completion of the integration of NTC and Contemporary, the company plans more acquisitions of complementary companies and product lines.
